Parish News

Hi Team- Everything is in and all permits have been approved!

Weather dependent.. We plan to start putting up the racking system then panels on Monday the 23rd. Crew and I should arrive around 9 or 10am and will start then. They should need limited access to the office so that they can get to the roof a few times.

Again weather dependent, they should be done by the end of the week with the installation process and the electrician may be back the following week to finish up some wiring inside.

Rally Day is Sunday, September 12.  Worship will be at 8:30 and 10:00, both with communion.  This will be our first day of Sunday School for this year, which will be during the 10:00 service.  Sunday School is for kids age 3 though grade 6, and NO pre-registration is necessary!

The picnic will be at noon — burger and dogs provided, bring a side dish or dessert to share, and join us under the tent.  Everyone is welcome!

Good news! The first step in building our solar array is complete - our parking lot now has a short-term storage container which will be used by the installers within the month.  Once they are on the roof, the state will inspect them and, in about one month’s time, give us the go-ahead to produce both energy and SREC’s (solar renewable energy credits).

Thanks to Clean Energy for their partnership in this, and to Dick Olsen, David Spence, and our Church Council for their leadership!

We had a rousing VBS in June, with 70 kids registered and many teens and adults lending their skill, energy, and faithful love.  We learned about Trusting, Loving, Caring, Following, and Sharing through the animals of the African savannah.  Together, we experienced the goodness of God and the joy of community.

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

We continue to monitor the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and pray fervently for all those who have been affected. Indeed, while the long-term effects of this tragedy will be felt by all of us, for those whose lives and livelihoods have been directly impacted, the needs for help are acute and overwhelming.

Earlier this week, Jessica Vermilyea, disaster coordinator with Lutheran Social Services of the South, took part in an ecumenical listening tour into the bayou marsh areas of Plaquemines Parish in southeastern Louisiana. As part of this group, Jessica heard from fishermen, business owners, and other local leaders about how the oil spill is affecting them, even as many of them continue to struggle with recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

We have received numerous inquiries from Lutherans around the country about volunteering in some capacity along the Gulf Coast. At this moment, only people who are being specifically trained and equipped by BP are being permitted to work directly in the clean-up process. This has much to do with the health and safety risks of handling the crude oil. In the future, opportunities may emerge for other types of volunteer roles, and each state in the area is receiving names of volunteers who are interested in helping. Several questions have been raised about whether a national funding appeal should be launched in response to this tragedy. Our commitment has always been that we will find the most efficient ways possible to use financial contributions to meet unmet needs that arise from disaster. At this time, BP has pledged that it is their responsibility to pay for all costs related to clean-up as well as to reimburse those who have experienced a loss of income as a result of the spill, and anyone seeking to file a claim can do so directly through the BP Web site. Given the unique nature of this situation, we will not be seeking funding for this response.

Instead, we lift up the unfolding needs of those in the many states affected by flooding and tornadoes so far this spring, including as recently as this past weekend in Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois. I ask you to consider giving a gift to support the responses getting underway in places like Yazoo City, Mississippi and Nashville, Tennessee. Click here to give today.

In the mean time, we will continue to listen for emerging unmet needs along the Gulf Coast and for meaningful ways that we might engage there. As we do, I ask for your continued prayers for the beautiful land and people of the Gulf Coast as they struggle to overcome this continuing tragedy.

In service,

Rev. Kevin A. Massey, Director

Gloria Dei, as a congregation, approved the installation of solar panels on our roof (ironically, the part facing the power lines!).  Because the NJ Board of Public Utilities is overwhelmed with applications, it is likely that our system will not be operational until October.  We thank Clean Energy USA for their partnership in this endeavor, and Gloria Dei members Dick Olsen and David Spence for their leadership in bringing the idea and gathering information through this process!

This is the house that Lutherans in Morris County are building together.  Our next workday is Saturday, June 19 — we’d love to have your help!  You can sign up through the Church office or with Dick Olsen.  You can also sign up to “donate” (provide funds for) doors, windows, and boxes of nails!
